OUR LATEST WANDERINGS

< exploring southern africa kilometer by kilometer >

“If ever I’ve seen magic, it has been in Africa.” – John Hemingway

LULA IN MOUNTAIN ZEBRA NATIONAL PARK

< a pyjama party >

The misconception that the Karoo is flat is never more evident than in Mountain Zebra National Park, framed by the backdrop of the rounded dome-peaks of the Bankberg mountain range, its deep-etched valleys with gushing rivers and streams, and flat mountain-top plateaus, which at first appear to stretch infinitely, but drop off steeply down intimating cliff edges.

LULA IN ADDO

< elephants galore >

I wasn’t entirely convinced we’d see elephants, but they were everywhere! With only a day and a smidge in the reserve, we started at Hapoor watering hole and sat patiently waiting for the herds to arrive. And they did! Herd after herd! We think we probably watched around 250 gentle giants run joyfully to greet other elephants, mud bathe, and drink together. It was a party.

LULA IN FRANCE

< a taste of europe >

The Dordogne Valley is home to some of the country’s most picture-perfect countryside, hill-top villages, medieval castles, mysterious caves, delicious food and now too, my family’s three big bear dogs, Bentley, Bellsie & Floyd.

The region also boasts 10 of France’s Plus Beaux Villages and goodness, vineyards galore, so even if you’re traveling solo like I did, wandering aimlessly through cobblestone streets or wine-tasting at the local wine farm is a perfect way to spend an entire afternoon.

LULA IN CERES

< a winter wonderland >

On every possible road from Ceres to Matroosberg Nature Reserve, people had parked, alighted, and were playing, adults and children, yelling and slipping and rolling down snow-covered hills, building elaborate snow creatures, chasing each other with snowballs, and enjoying a rare sight in a normally green part of our country.

The snow brought a sense of childlike wonder and joy. We all got to play with reckless abandon. What medicine for the soul.

A LEOPARD LOVE AFFAIR

< the spotted one >

Then, there she was, the most beautiful leopard. Over the next few days, we would spend hours with this playful, bright-eyed creature and be ever so thankful we didn’t make it out of the park after all.

LULA IN LESOTHO

< sani pass in the snow >

With Lula’s heater on the fritz, we set off up the highest (and arguably the most spectacular) mountain pass in Africa to meet the snow in the wild lands of Lesotho, completely unprepared! Next time, we’ll pack more than just a bobble hat and a pair of gloves each!

LULA IN THE TANKWA KAROO

< wide-open spaces & other worldly landscapes >

Although only 4 hours away from Cape Town, Tankwa Karoo may as well be an entirely different planet. Desolate, isolate & endlessly beautiful.

LULA IN FRANCE

< bonjour la campagne >

It’s hard to say goodbye to African soil, even for a couple of weeks in the southwest of France in peak summer. But that’s exactly what I did when my mom called to say my dogs (our family dogs) were without a babysitter…

LULA IN CERES

On every possible road from Ceres to Matroosberg Nature Reserve, people had parked, alighted, and were playing, adults and children, yelling and slipping and rolling down snow-covered hills, building elaborate snow creatures, chasing each other with snowballs…

< other worldly landscapes >

Although only four hours away from Cape Town, the Tankwa Karoo may as well be an entirely different planet. It is desolate, isolate & endlessly beautiful.

LULA IN ATLANTIS

< white sands >

Lula was about two minutes old (at least to us) & so the boys suggested a day of 4x4ing at the Atlantis Dunes! As always, go big…

LULA IN GREYTON

< local is lekker >

Greyton is one of our favourite local places! To drive Lula in a field full of yellow sunshine flowers & up a mountain to enjoy an epic view was such a dream!

LULA IN CEDERBERG

< ancient lands >

We’ve been to the Cederberg a gazillion times, but even a day trip out to this ancient & sculptural rocky wilderness is always spectacular!

LULA IN THE WEST COAST NATIONAL PARK

< turquoise waters >

Tropical beaches don’t necessarily spring to mind when you mention the word ‘Africa’ but we’ve got them. Pink flamingos too.

LULA IN WALKER BAY

< the wild side >

It’s not every day you get to drive on an isolated beach. Walker Bay’s 4 x 4 Fishing Trail was beyond extraordinary.

LULA IN THE CAPE PENINSULA

< a waddle & a wade >

Home to some of Africa’s most unusual tuxedo-wearing creatures, this adventure right on our doorstep is one not to be missed.
